This 3-day expedition takes you deep into the Afar Region to explore the surreal Dallol hydrothermal fields, vast salt flats, traditional Afar salt caravans, and the dramatic Erta Ale Volcano with its permanent lava lake. The journey is led by experienced local guides and supported by a fully equipped expedition team.

Itinerary

Day 1 :
Addis Ababa – Semera – Dallol – Hamed Ela
  • Morning flight from Addis Ababa to Semera.
    Meet your guide and drive by 4x4 vehicles into the Danakil Depression.
  • Visit the spectacular Dallol hydrothermal formations, sulfur springs, salt domes, and colorful mineral fields.
  • Continue to the Asale Salt Flats, witnessing traditional Afar salt mining and camel caravans.
  • Drive to Hamed Ela village.
    Overnight: Open-air camping (traditional beds)

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2 :
Hamed Ela – Erta Ale Volcano
  • Early morning visit to salt mining areas and caravan routes.
  • Drive through lava fields and desert landscapes toward Erta Ale Volcano.
  • Late afternoon hike (approx. 30–40 minutes) to the crater rim.
  • Evening visit to the lava lake, one of the few permanent lava lakes in the world.
  • Overnight: Camping near Erta Ale crater

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3 :
Erta Ale – Semera – Addis Ababa
  • Optional sunrise visit to the lava lake.
  • Descend from the crater and drive back to Semera.
  • Afternoon flight back to Addis Ababa.
