This 4-day expedition takes you deep into northeastern Ethiopia to explore Dallol, Erta Ale Volcano, and the traditional Afar salt caravans, guided by experienced local experts and supported by a well-organized expedition crew.

Itinerary
Morning flight from Addis Ababa to Semera.
Meet expedition team and depart by 4x4 vehicles into the Afar lowlands.
Drive to Lake Afdera, a volcanic salt lake below sea level.
Afternoon walk around the lake to observe traditional salt extraction and desert scenery.
Overnight: Camping near Afdera
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Early departure to the Dallol Depression, the lowest point in Africa (~-125 m).
Explore the colorful hydrothermal formations, sulfur springs, salt canyons, and salt domes of Dallol.
Visit Asale Salt Flats, witnessing Afar salt caravans loading camels.
Continue to Hamed Ela, a remote desert settlement.
Overnight: Open-air camping (traditional beds)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Morning visit to salt mining areas and camel caravans.
Drive toward Erta Ale Volcano, passing lava fields and volcanic landscapes.
Late afternoon hike (approx. 30–40 minutes) to the crater rim.
Evening visit to the lava lake—one of the few permanent lava lakes in the world.
Overnight: Camping near Erta Ale crater

Optional sunrise visit to the lava lake.
Descend from Erta Ale and drive back to Semera.
Afternoon flight back to Addis Ababa.
