Axum
Between roughly the first and tenth centuries CE, the Kingdom of Aksum minted its own currency and traded across the Red Sea as far as India — a wealth still visible in the carved granite stelae of its necropolis and in the churches that make the town Orthodoxy's spiritual capital.

Why We Go
Capital of an ancient trading empire, and Ethiopian Orthodoxy's spiritual centre.
The stelae are less monuments than engineering arguments: single pieces of granite carved to mimic multi-storey buildings, complete with false doors and window frames, quarried and raised without the machinery later ages would consider necessary. The fallen Great Stele still dominates the field; the standing carved shafts show what the builders intended.
Tradition holds that the Ark of the Covenant rests in Axum's Chapel of the Tablet. Visitors do not enter; the threshold visit and the neighbouring St Mary of Zion complex are the public face of a claim that shapes Ethiopian Orthodox identity. We schedule mornings for the stelae and inscriptions, afternoons for the chapel precinct when light is softer.
Yeha, a short drive toward Adwa, predates Aksum's imperial peak — a sandstone temple from the pre-Aksumite period that rewards anyone curious about what came before the stelae. Pair Axum with Gheralta when regional access allows: cliff churches a few hours south, frescoed and still served by their priests.
