Bale Mountains
The Sanetti Plateau, above 4,000 metres, is the largest continuous stretch of Afro-alpine habitat left in Africa — and home to roughly half of the fewer than five hundred Ethiopian wolves believed to survive. Below it, the Harenna forest holds wild Coffea arabica and a different, damper ecology.

Why We Go
The single best place on earth to see a wild Ethiopian wolf.
Wild Arabica coffee still grows in the understorey of the Harenna forest below the plateau — one of the places botanists point to when tracing the plant back to its origin, before it ever reached a cup. Colobus monkeys move through the same canopy; the road over Sanetti is one of Africa's highest all-weather routes.
We split most itineraries across both faces of the range: the exposed, cold plateau for wolves and endemic birds at dawn, then a night dropped into Harenna's cloud forest for a damper kind of quiet. Dinsho on the northern side is the usual park gateway and the best ground for mountain nyala toward dusk.
November to April is the clearer, colder window on the plateau; nights regularly freeze. A dedicated wildlife guide and park scout are non-negotiable for wolf work — the animals are habituated to vehicles on Sanetti but still wild, and distance ethics matter. Pair Bale with the Rift lakes on the drive south from Addis, or with Sof Omar for a caves-and-highlands contrast.
